Portsmouth's Glen Johnson Set To Join Liverpool

According to reports in the British press, Liverpool are set to win the race for Portsmouth's Glen Johnson. According to The Times, the Reds have had an offer of £18.5 million plus add-ons accepted, while Chelsea andManchester City, who were also thought to be in the hunt for the 24-year-old, have not met his valuation. The Sun, meanwhile, claims that the deal is worth £19m and that the 15-time capped England international has opted to move to the Merseyside outfit. Although Johnson is expected to arrive at Anfield on Wednesday for a medical, it is thought there still remains a slight possibility that either the Blues or the Citizens might yet steal the 5ft 11in defender's signature with a late bid. However, the signs at present seem to suggest that the former West Ham United star will be a Liverpool player for the 2009-10 season. It is thought that Reds manager Rafael Benitez could sell Andrea Dossena, a reported Juventus target, and Alvaro Arbeloa, who has been linked with Real Madrid, in order to fund the deal.
