STUTTGART CLOSE IN ON HUNTELAAR

Stuttgart look to be closing in on the signing of Holland striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar from Real Madrid.

The former Ajax man's future with the Primera Division giants looks bleak following their captures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

The two clubs have reportedly agreed an 18million euro fee, with a further 2million to follow if Stuttgart qualify for the Champions League, while the German club's sporting director Jochen Schneider is believed to have met with Huntelaar's agent Arnold Oosterver on Thursday.

Stuttgart have identified Huntelaar as the ideal replacement for Mario Gomez, who joined Bayern Munich earlier this summer.

"It's not important for me whether the new striker is here tomorrow or in a week's time," coach Markus Babbel told Stuttgarter Zeitung.

"He would fit what we are looking for exactly."

Stuttgart defender and fellow Dutchman Khalid Boulahrouz would love Huntelaar as a team-mate next season.

"If this transfer goes through, Stuttgart would have done some good business," he said.

"He will help us. He is a complete striker."

Stuttgart goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, meanwhile, claims he will retire at the end of the season.

The former Arsenal stopper said: "For me this will be a special season. It will be my last."
