STUTTGART EYE TUNCAY MOVE

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate has confirmed that Tuncay is wanted by Bundesliga outfit Stuttgart.

The Turkey international is expected to leave the Riverside this summer in the wake of Boro's relegation to the Championship.

Markus Babbel's side, who have already secured the services of Alexander Hleb from Barcelona, are still to make an official approach for Tuncay.

"I believe there's some interest there but we haven't had an offer as such," Southgate told theEvening Gazette.

Southgate is also anticipating that strikers Mido and Afonso Alves will leave Teesside in the coming weeks, although there has been no progress, with the Boro boss adding: "Nothing has changed."

Young Galway United winger Jay O'Shea has been linked with a move to Boro, but Southgate insists reports of a swoop for the 20-year-old are premature.

"He's a player we've had a look at but at the moment our priority is players who are going to go straight into our first team," added Southgate.

"Our reports are good on him but it's not something we are able to do at the moment."

ZOLA EYES GUDJOHNSEN SWOOP

Gianfranco Zola has named Eidur Gudjohnsen as a possible transfer target as West Ham bid to bolster their attacking options.

The Hammers recently revealed that forward Luis Boa Morte could be out until the New Year after sustaining anterior cruciate ligament damage.

With striker Dean Ashton looking bound for Stoke, Zola has limited options up front heading into the new season.

The Italian has been strongly linked with a move for Inter Milan's Mario Balotelli this week, with Carlton Cole now the only fit recognised striker.

Keen to bring in more than one name, he admits that a move for Barcelona striker Gudjohnsen would not be completely out of the question.

"Lots of players have been linked to West Ham and Gudjohnsen is one of them," he said.

"We would love to have him playing for us, but we will see what happens.

"We have to be more effective going forward and certainly we are on the lookout for another striker.

"I don't know who it will be, but hopefully somebody will come."

He added: "I am thinking more about Boa Morte himself, not about how I can replace him.

"My main concern is that he is better as soon as possible."

Arbeloa delighted to return to the Bernabeu

Alvaro Arbeloa revealed he set his heart on a return to Real Madrid as soon as he discovered the Spanish giants were interested in taking him back to the Bernabeu this summer.

Arbeloa spent Wednesday in the Spanish capital putting the finishing touches on his move from Liverpool after Madrid agreed a reported £3.5m deal with the English club for the versatile defender.

The 26-year-old has agreed a five-year contract with Madrid and becomes the club's seventh signing since Florentino Perez returned to the presidency in June, following in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema, Raul Albiol, Alvaro Negredo and Esteban Granero.

Argentina centre-back Ezequiel Garay is also a new face at the club, although he was signed from Racing Santander 12 months ago before immediately being loaned back to the Cantabrian side for last season.

Arbeloa is no stranger to Madrid, as he spent five years working his way up through the youth ranks before moving to Deportivo La Coruna in 2006, and then onto Liverpool six months later.

The defender failed to establish himself in the first team during his previous spell at the Bernabeu, making just a couple of senior appearances, so when the chance arose for a second bite at the cherry, Arbeloa admits he was determined to take it.

"Since the door was opened to the possibility of coming here I was hoping for it to happen with all my heart, and I'm very happy to be able to return," he told RealmadridTV.

"Not even in your best dreams can you imagine that you are going to be in the Real Madrid first team," he said.

"Moreover, when you leave the club with the feeling of not being able to be in the first team, you know that it's very difficult to return, so for me, when this opportunity presented itself, my first objective was to take it and fortunately I'm here.

"I'm delighted and eager to take this opportunity and get out onto the pitch to train, to play and to enjoy it.

"I think that any kid, regardless of their team, would take advantage of the chance to come to Real Madrid, and especially with the sporting project here now."

The Spain international, who was part of last summer's successful Euro 2008-winning squad, spent just six months at Depor before Liverpool snapped him up in January 2007 for £2.6million.

While at Anfield, Arbeloa played 99 games for the club and the Salamanca-born stopper believes his time at Liverpool will stand him in good stead for the pressures of trying to help big-spending Madrid get back among the elite of European football.

"Liverpool are a club with an impressive history, with lots of success," he said.

"In England they are the team with the most titles...So I've already experienced that pressure and I hope that will help me now with this challenge, which is clearly the biggest in my career.

"I think I've become a better footballer and also matured. When you play at a club like Liverpool you have the chance to play with great players, I've also been called up by Spain and we`ve won the European Championships...so in these years I've learned a huge amount.

"It's made me a much better player and I hope to be able to show it, which in the end is the important thing."

Arbeloa is the latest piece in a puzzle that Madrid hope will see them challenging for honours both domestically and in Europe next season after a number of years of underachievement.

In the Champions League, nine-times European champions Madrid have failed to get beyond the last 16 in any of the last five editions, while last season they had to watch on as arch-rivals Barcelona won an unprecedented treble, leaving the Whites empty-handed for the fourth time in six years.

Arbeloa is keen to help Madrid get back on the trophy trail next season, saying: "My objective is to give it everything in training and try to win myself a place in the team, which is the objective of any player. And of course I want to help my team-mates and the team to win titles, which in the end is what counts."

Lyon agree deal to sign Gomis from St Etienne

Lyon coach Claude Puel has confirmed the imminent transfer of striker Bafetimbi Gomis will wrap up the club's close-season shopping spree.

Les Gones will take their summer spending to €70m once Gomis passes his medical on Thursday and signs a five-year contract with the arch-rivals of his current club St Etienne.

Since selling Karim Benzema to Real Madrid for €35m, Lyon have signed striker Lisandro Lopez for €24m, left-winger Michel Bastos for €18m and left-back Aly Cissokho for €15m.

Once Gomis signs on the dotted line for €13m, it will bring an end to Lyon's frenzied activity in the transfer market this summer.

"With the arrival of Bafe Gomis, our recruitment is completed,'' Puel told his club's official website. "There could be some adjustments within our team, but not in the scope of more arrivals.

"At the end of the season, I'd asked for the arrival of three or four players. There have been four of them; we have got what we wanted. Now the truth lies on the pitch.''

Gomis, 24 next month, was a member of France's squad in the ill-fated Euro 2008 campaign after finishing the 2007/08 season strongly.

But he was disappointing last term and struggled for goals as St Etienne narrowly avoided relegation.

He was not on Lyon's initial wishlist of strikers to replace Benzema but after they failed to sign Loic Remy and Andre-Pierre Gignac, the deposed French champions turned to Gomis.

"I didn't want to move for moving's sake, only for an ambitious club,'' Gomis said. "From the moment I know Lyon were interested in me, I didn't hesitate. Everything happened very quickly because there was a common desire to work together.''

Elano leaves City to join up with Galatasaray

Galatasaray have announced the signing of Brazilian midfielder Elano on a four-year contract from Manchester City.

The Brazilian did not settle in England.

Elano's future at the City of Manchester Stadium had been uncertain after he found himself in and out of Mark Hughes' side last season and had had been linked with moves to several clubs in Italy.

Juventus were mooted as admirers of the 28-year-old, while city rivals AC Milan and Inter Milan had recently been credited with an interest. Although no concrete offer was made.

But on Thursday night, Elano accepted a surprise move to Turkey after Galatasaray confirmed he had signed a contract until 2013.

Reports have put the fee in the region of £8m - the figure City paid to sign Elano from Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk two years ago.

During his time at City, Elano scored 18 goals in 80 appearances in all competitions, but has been squeezed out by the raft of big-name signings at the club over the summer.

"Fed up" Mascherano reiterates Barcelona desire

Javier Mascherano could be the latest midfielder to leave Liverpool for La Liga after the player's brother said he wanted a move to Barcelona.

Alonso and Mascherano: Heading for Spain?

After Xabi Alonso reportedly handed in a transfer request in his bid to claim a move to Real Madrid, Mascherano's brother now claims the Argentine is keen on a move to their biggest rivals.

Sebastian Mascherano told Spain's COM Radio: 'If Barcelona really come with a very good cash offer, I believe Javier may leave Liverpool as it would be the best for him and his family.

'But I think that if there is no good offer, they will not let him go."

Mascherano's agent Walter Tamer said last week the 25-year-old is 'tired of life' in England with Pep Guardiola's side his preferred destination.

Now the Liverpool star's brother has claimed Mascherano is keen to link up with fellow countryman Lionel Messi.

'I am sure Messi and Javier have spoken,' he said. 'Leo is one of the people who have been pushing the most for Javier to play at Barca.'

Should Alonso be allowed to leave, Rafael Benitez will surely battle hard to keep Mascherano at the club.

Valencia scores on United debut

Antonio Valencia scored on his Manchester United debut as the Red Devils reached the final of the Audi Cup in Munich with a 2-1 win over Boca Juniors.

Anderson is mobbed after scoring

Anderson is mobbed after scoring

The Ecuadorian winger needed just 42 minutes of his United debut to find the target after Anderson had earlier netted his first goal for the club with a stunning free-kick.

Federico Insua reduced the arrears in the 55th minute as the Argentinians dominated the second half, but Sir Alex Ferguson's side held on to reach tomorrow's final, where they will meet the winner of the later clash between AC Milan and hosts Bayern Munich.

Ferguson named Federico Macheda and Wayne Rooney in his attack with Valencia making his debut on the right wing.

Much of the attention was on the Ecuadorian, who is earmarked to fill the void left by the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid.

His first few touches exhibited a touch of nerves and it was Boca who made the more confident start to the game with Juan Roman Riquelme playing an intricate one-two with Insua before his shot was deflected wide of the post.

The sale of Ronaldo has not only provided Valencia with the opportunity to take his career onto the next level, but Anderson showed he too could benefit from a bit more of the limelight this season.

He curled an unstoppable free-kick from outside the right-hand corner of the penalty area into the far corner of Roberto Abbondanzieri's goal for his first ever goal for the Red Devils.

He was inevitably invited by the fans to shoot the next time he received the ball 25 yards from goal, but his earlier strike had not quite given him the confidence to try his luck once again as he instead laid the ball off to Wayne Rooney.

The sight of Wes Brown limping from the field with 10 minutes of the first half remaining dampened the spirits somewhat as Rio Ferdinand made an earlier than expected entrance into the game.

By this time, Rooney was fully warmed up and he led United's search for a second.

His first shot, a volley from fully 35 yards out, drew the approval from 61,000 fans inside the Allianz Arena, but it lacked the direction to trouble Abbondanzieri.

Rooney's persistence almost earned him United's second five minutes before the break. He had two bites of the cherry from Valencia's right-wing cross but was denied twice, first by a Boca defender and then by Abbondanzieri.

Valencia's early nerves had evaporated as he started to find his rhythm and it was not long before he opened his account for his new club.

He received the ball centrally from Rooney and, with a dip of the shoulder, he skipped past two Boca defenders before taking aim and releasing a shot from the edge of the area which squirmed under Abbondanzieri's body and in.

Boca emerged for the second half five minutes later than United, but they entered the field with a renewed determination.

Substitute Christian Chavez's curling shot tested Tomaz Kuszczak for the first time in the 52nd minute before Insua brought Alfio Basile's side back into the tie.

He volleyed in Gary Medel's right-wing cross as Boca began to stamp their authority on the game.

Riquelme curled a shot just wide before Craig Cathcart headed against his own crossbar as United began to show a degree of tiredness after their recent trip to the Far East.

Riquelme tested Kuszczak again with 15 minutes remaining and Pablo Mouche's effort just skimmed past the United goalkeeper's left-hand upright as Boca threatened an equaliser, but failed to find one.

Toure: City move on the cards for six months

Kolo Toure has revealed his move to Manchester City was in the pipeline six months ago.

Toure: City new boy.

Mark Hughes' latest recruit was introduced to the press after signing a four-year deal at Eastlands on Wednesday.

And the 28-year-old says he was fixed on a move north even before fellow former Gunner Emmanuel Adebayor joined the club two weeks ago.

"I think before Adebayor we knew,'' he said. "There was some talk about coming here. It's from six months ago.''

Toure claims he had received offers from abroad, but never contemplated leaving the Premier League.

He said: "I was the last one in the 'Invincibles' team (the Arsenal side that went a whole season unbeaten in the league) and I was expecting to leave Arsenal. I think Arsenal are a really good team, but it was the right time for me to move.

"First I thought I did not want to leave England, even though other teams came in for me. But it was important not to leave for me and my family. Manchester City are a really good team and want to do something. I am really delighted to be here, the future is big.''

Toure said he expects his new club to mount a challenge for the Premier League title next season. "Yes, I believe (so), that's why I am here," he said. "The quality is big, there are fantastic players here.

"I will give everything I have to make the club one of the best in England.''

Hughes is waiting to see whether City will manage to further boost their defence by signingJoleon Lescott, with Everton confirming on Thursday they had rejected an £18million bid for the former Wolves centre-back.

"My understanding is that we've already done that and by all accounts Everton have rejected that,'' the Welshman said of the latest bid. "We'll wait and see.''

Hughes has been impressed with what he has seen so far of 28-year-old Toure.

"We're absolutely delighted Kolo's here,'' he said. "Until you actually work really closely with a player, you have impressions from afar of the qualities they display for their clubs but once you get close up it's reassuring everything you've seen in the past comes to fruition. He's showed that in the space of time over one session.''

He also claimed Toure would still have been purchased had the attempt to lure Chelsea captain John Terry to Eastlands been successful.

"I would say yes,'' he said in reply to that question. "We've looked at players we feel will help us. There's no difference in the quality of players we've targeted. We're looking at players who will be at the same level to help us progress.

"We have a list of category A players of the type that will enable us to be successful in the future. John Terry was on that list and Kolo very much so. We don't move from one player to a less player, we go from one player to next at that level.

"He's going to help us in a great way, his leadership qualities were evident this morning. He has the benefit of being at a top, top club. He understands the mentality you need, we've seen that already.

"We're progressing nicely. The business we've already done is exceptional. We're really pleased with the quality we've been able to bring in. Obviously there's still a way to go in the transfer window and we'll look at opportunities and see what we can bring in.

"They'll have to be top-quality players to improve us. There's always deals to be made towards the end of the window that just present themselves and are right for the club at that time.''

Vieira set for sensational return to Arsenal?

Former Arsenal skipper Patrick Vieira could be set for a sensational return to the club after reports that manager Arsene Wenger is considering a swoop for the midfielder.

Patrick Vieira

Patrick Vieira: Available for free

The 33-year-old midfielder has had a tough time with Inter since joining them in 2006 - despite winning three Italian league titles - and has just over 50 appearances in the last three years.

Vieira is available on a free transfer and he is keen to link up with a club that would offer him the chance to prepare for the World Cup in South Africa next year.

Tottenham Hotspur also registered an interest last week and, the Frenchman is reportedly being offered a pay-as-you-play contract at the Emirates, similar to the one offered by the White Hart Lane club.

Gunners' legend Ian Wright claims that the deal could be on.

"I'm hearing Vieira, pay-as-you-play, back at Arsenal," Wright exclaimed on his Talksportshow. "That's what I'm hearing, and that's what I'm hoping."

The Arsenal side, who have just lost Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor, have not won any silverware since Vieira scored the winning penalty in a shootout against Manchester United in the FA Cup final in 2005.

Everton reject new £18m City bid for Lescott

Everton have confirmed they have rejected Manchester City's latest offer for Joleon Lescott.

Lescott is the subject of a second offer

Lescott is the subject of a second offer

City contacted their Premier League rivals with an increased bid of £18m for the central defender - but the Toffees have turned down the offer.

Earlier this summer, the Eastlands club had a bid of £15m rejected, with Everton boss David Moyes insisting no player will leave Everton this summer without his approval.

A club statement from the Goodison club on their official website read: ''We can confirm we have received an offer of £18m for Joleon Lescott from Manchester City and that offer has been rejected outright.''

Everton signed Lescott from Wolves in 2006 and the player has gone on to become a regular in both the Blues' starting XI and the England national squad.

The club had been bracing themselves for another attempt to persuade them to sell the Birmingham-born centre-back.

This time news of the bid was immediately relayed to Moyes in Salt Lake City, where he was preparing his side for their friendly with the Major League Soccer All-Stars side.

City are keen to add the versatile Lescott to their expensive new squad, having failed to land John Terry from Chelsea.

It is understood that Lescott, who lives in the Manchester area, would be interested in hearing City's plans for him.

However, one bargaining point disappeared last night, with City defender Nedum Onuoha signing a new five-year contract at Eastlands.

It had been suggested that Everton may be prepared to do business if Onuoha could have been part of a new deal.

But by raising the bid by only £3m from their first attempt, City clearly have no intention of going close to the fee of around £28m which could see Everton reconsider their determination to keep the player.

Alonso hands in Liverpool transfer request

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has reportedly handed in a transfer request at Anfield to ensure he gets his move to Real Madrid this summer.

Alonso: Which way to the Bernabeu?

Liverpool have refused to budge from an asking price for Alonso in the region of £30m, which has stalled any potential move to the Bernabeu, but their hand may now be forced as the Spain international has made his intentions clear.

Alonso has been at the centre of a long-running transfer saga as La Liga giants Madrid have made no secret of their desire to secure a deal.

Speculation suggests a fee will be struck with Madrid within the next couple of days for a sum reported to be in the region of £25m.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has said publicly he doesn't want to sell Alonso, especially asJavier Mascherano was said to be interesting Barcelona.

Alonso signed from Real Socieded for £10.5m in 2004 shortly after Benitez arrived at the club, and appeared to on his way out last summer as Liverpool chased Gareth Barry's signature.

Some reports claim it is that saga that prompted Alonso's request to leave Anfield, with Real Madrid his preferred destination.

Tottenham agree deal for Pompey striker Crouch

Tottenham have agreed a deal to sign Peter Crouch from Portsmouth. The England international is believed to cost around £9m after passing a medical and agreeing personal terms.

Harry Redknapp, Peter Crouch

Redknapp and Crouch: Scene to be repeated soon, but with a white shirt instead.

The deal reunites Crouch with Harry Redknapp, his former manager at Portsmouth and Southampton, and takes him full circle back to White Hart Lane where he spent two years as a trainee before being released without playing a first-team game.

A statement on the Spurs website read: ''We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Portsmouth for the transfer of Peter Crouch to the Club, following the player successfully completing a medical examination and agreeing personal terms.''

While on the Portsmouth website, a statement said: "We are sorry to see Peter go both as a player and a person and would like to thank him for playing a key role in keeping the club in the Premier League last season.

"His sale was necessitated by the club's commitment to repay scheduled debts while we are in a transitional period of completing the takeover.

"We will now be looking to add fresh faces to the first-team squad as soon as possible."

Earlier Tottenham boss Redknapp said he had wanted to swap Crouch for Darren Bent as he looks to change the balance of Spurs' attack.

"They want to sell him, it's common knowledge they need to sell him,'' said Redknapp after Sunday's 2-0 Wembley Cup defeat by Celtic. "I don't think they're crazy demands - it's a fair deal and his wages are fine. He's different. He holds the ball up. Celtic held the ball up well but we don't do that well enough.

"He gives you an option and he's played for me a few times before. He's always done a job and he's great on set-plays at both ends.''

Crouch's signing means the defeat by Celtic, when he missed three opportunities, could be Bent's last for the club.

"Darren is looking to go but it's up to people to make the offer that we want,'' Redknapp added. "Nobody misses chances deliberately. He tucked some great chances away in pre-season and he will always score goals. He's a good player but I just want some balance and Crouchy would give us something different.''

Leeds youngster Fabian Delph is another on Redknapp's radar, along with former Arsenal skipper Patrick Vieira.

Prolific Dzeko still has heart set on Milan move

Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko still has his heart set on a move to AC Milan, even though he is resigned to staying at Wolfsburg this season.

Dzeko

Dzeko in regular pose last season.

The Bosnian striker was a crucial part in Wolfsburg's Bundesliga-winning side last season, scoring 26 goals.

Dzeko's prolific form alerted Milan, but his club refused to let him make the switch to Serie A - much to the forward's disappointment.

"I am 23 years old and I receive an offer from the club I have always dreamed about - it was only honest for me to say I wanted to go there,'' he said.

"I stand by what I said. I was fascinated with this club from when I was a little boy. I don't know why, but AC Milan was always the biggest team in the world for me. I always wanted to go there.''

Despite stating his preference to join the Rossoneri, Dzeko was told that he would be going nowhere and that he should instead concentrate on fulfilling the remaining two years of his contract.

Nevertheless, Dzeko expects the opportunity to join Milan to present itself again next summer.

"You don't always get what you want in life, at least not straight away,'' he told the Welt newspaper. "It was the club's right to say no. That's just the way things are.

"I am not mad with Wolfsburg in any way and am not going to cause any commotion. I am staying here and will try to play even better next year than I have up to now. What happens after that remains to be seen.

"I will always dream [about Milan].''

Although Dzeko would still love the chance to join Milan, he remains focused on Wolfsburg and has not ruled out extending his contract with the Bundesliga champions.

"I am happy in Wolfsburg, so why not?'' he said.

Wolfsburg coach Armin Veh confirmed that talks over a new contract are under way and that he hopes a decision can be taken within a week, which is also Dzeko's desire.

"I want the talks to be concluded before the start of the season so that I can concentrate on the games,'' he added.

Arbeloa claims Madrid move is "nearly completed"

Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa says he is close to sealing a transfer to Real Madrid even though the big-spending Spanish side seem more concerned with trimming their squad after an extravagant close-season spending spree.

Alvaro Arbeloa in action against Real Madrid

"At present I am only focused on Liverpool but it is true that (the deal) is nearly completed," the 26-year-old told sports daily Marca on Tuesday.

"We'll see what happens in the next few days, if we can all make an effort so the the negotiations come to a good end, and we all come out having benefited, which is what everyone wants.

"I insist that everything is going forwards and everyone is in agreement - I am the one who has the most desire to sign for Madrid.

"I don't know what the likelihood is in percentages, it's a question more for the clubs. But, as I understand, it seems everything is going well and there is little left to resolve. It could all be sealed this week.''

Real President Florentino Perez has said, however, that his primary concern was to offload players before adding to a squad that has already been reinforced with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema.

"The only way for new players to arrive is for others to go," he was quoted as saying in Spanish media on Tuesday. "It isn't only a problem of money. We have 29 players and we need a squad of 25."

Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Rafael van der Vaart and Gabriel Heinze have all been left out of the squad during the Peace Cup friendly tournament and are among the players considered surplus to requirements.

Also potentially on his way out of Anfield is Andrea Dossena, whose agent claims Liverpool have accepted an offer from Napoli for the Italy defender.

It was revealed on Monday that Dossena was keen on a move back to Italy having failed to settle on Merseyside and that Napoli had made a bid of £4.3m plus bonuses.

Roberto La Florio insists this has been accepted by Liverpool, who signed the 27-year-old barely 12 months ago. "Liverpool have accepted (Napoli chairman) Aurelio De Laurentiis' offer,'' he told Radio Kiss Kiss. "It's now just a matter of days.

"The two clubs are in agreement, Liverpool accepted Napoli's offer but I can't say any more. With regards to Andrea there are no problems, it's only a matter of days. As soon as Napoli call us, we will finalise it.''

Dossena only moved to Anfield last season from Udinese but has failed to settle in and is likely to find himself even more surplus to requirements following the arrival of Glen Johnson on Merseyside.

City agree fee with Arsenal for Toure

Arsenal managerArsene Wenger has confirmed Kolo Toure could be on his way to Manchester City as the clubs haggle over a fee for the Ivorian.

Toure could be arguing with Rooney in a sky blue shirt this season.

Mark Hughes is still desperate to land a big-name defender before the start of the Premier League season, and switched attention to Toure once his high-profile move for Chelsea captain John Terrycollapsed.

The 28-year-old could now fly back from Arsenal's pre-season tour of Austria to discuss terms and have a medical.

Wenger said the next 24 hours were potentially decisive. He told Arsenal TV: "We will see what's happening in the next 24 hours, nothing is decided yet.

"We have seven centre-backs and I am in the position where I have to play some in midfield but of course Kolo is a very good player and we will see what will happen in the next 24 hours."

Toure has spent seven years at Arsenal and is the only remaining member of Wenger's squad to have played in the Invicibles campaign of 2003/4.

He was said to be upset to see Emmanuel Adebayor leave the Gunners recently and is known to have a frosty relationship with fellow defender William Gallas.

The 28-year-old had an inconsistent season and was dropped several times by his manager.

And with a bumper fee on offer for Wenger and huge wages in prospect for Toure, both parties could be willing to do a deal.

Arsenal have strengthened their back line this summer with the £10m capture of Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax, and Wenger revealed there could be more new faces in before the new season gets underway.

He said: "I am more focused on getting everybody fit for the start of the season but we are looking at opportunities as well, there are still some pre-season games to see what we really need. When the time comes we will do something.''

Brown insists Hull deal for Zamora is still alive

Hull manager Phil Brown insists the deal to sign Bobby Zamora remains very much alive despite claims to the contrary from Fulham boss Roy Hodgson.

A rare sight: Zamora scoring last season.

The Tigers have had a £5m bid accepted for the striker and the former England Under-21 international held discussions with Brown over a move to the KC Stadium.

Hodgson, who lost out to Tottenham on signing Peter Crouch, believes Zamora has decided to stay at Fulham.

Brown has so far been frustrated in his hunt for a striker having failed to signFraizer Campbell, Michael Owen and Marc-Antoine Fortune but is confident the deal for Zamora is still on.

"As far as I am concerned the door is not closed,'' he said. "The deal has been agreed between the two clubs and now we are trying to agree personal terms and that is where we stand.''

Meanwhile, reports suggesting Hull have expressed their interest in Tottenham full-back Alan Hutton have been rubbished by Harry Redknapp. "I never had an approach from Hull for Alan Hutton,'' said the Spurs boss. "I don't know anything about that.''

Terry hopes Cole and Drogba sign new deals

John Terry hopes key players such as Ashley Cole and Didier Drogba will follow his example and pledge their futures to Chelsea.

The 28-year-old has been a high-profile target of Manchester City this summer and had pointedly remained silent on the matter until he released a statement on Monday insisting he will be staying with the Stamford Bridge club.

Chelsea captain Terry explained: "I was on holiday when I got the call from Peter (chief executive, Kenyon) to tell me about Manchester City.

"I've been here for 14 years now, I want to keep it that way and win a lot more trophies here.

"I was very flattered and honoured about the bid but I wanted reassurances key players around me, people like Ashley and Didier, who are in for contract talks at the moment, were going to be around.

"I've got three years left on my contract and hopefully if I have a good year they'll be talking to me about a new deal sooner rather than later.''

Meanwhile, the England defender told his club's official website that he is "really impressed with new manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Terry explained: "I've been really impressed. I've had conversations with him on the training field and his knowledge speaks for itself.

"He has been very successful as a player and a manager and he can relate to the players playing nowadays and I think that will be key in the season ahead of us.

"We are fortunate to have him and everyone is fighting for their places again. For people who were out of the frame last year it's a chance for them to wipe the slate clean and maybe push for a place in the team, so things are buzzing around the camp at the moment.''

Zola still hopeful of tying Lucas Neill to new deal

West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola remains hopeful of convincing defender Lucas Neill to sign a new deal with the club.

Lucas Neill

Lucas Neill: Staying at Upton Park?

The Australia international's contract at Upton Park expired at the end of June and he did not fly to Beijing with the Hammers for this week's Asia Trophy, fuelling speculation that his future lies elsewhere.

He had previously rejected a fresh offer from West Ham when they are believed to have offered the 31-year-old reduced terms to remain at the club.

Mark Hughes, who previously worked with Neill at Blackburn, has been linked with a bid to take the player to Manchester City, while reports also claim Galatasaray are keen to reunite him with Socceroos team-mate Harry Kewell.

But Zola sees Neill as a key player for West Ham as they look to improve on their ninth-placed finish last season and insists talks remain ongoing.

"Lucas Neill is talking with the club,'' said the Italian. "We need obviously to have some negotiations but I am hoping that he is going to join us as soon as possible.

"I know his name has been linked to other clubs. Last time I spoke to the player he told me that if anything could happen he would call me first. So far he has not called me so I assume he is not yet going anywhere.

"He was an important player last year and our aim this year is to work to improve how we did last season and we hope that he will make his decision.''

Meanwhile, Zola is adamant the club's participation in the Asia Trophy this week will prove beneficial to the players for the coming season.

The Hammers recently completed a two-week training camp in Austria before heading to China where they will play Premier League rivals Tottenham at Beijing's Workers Stadium tomorrow.

Zola has brought a strong squad to the Chinese capital and the 43-year-old believes that participating in competitive games this summer will stand his side in good stead come the start of the season.

"It is important for us to play competitive games,'' he said. "My team will give 100% as if we want to be in good shape for the season we need to be playing competitive games.''

Mourinho eyes up United job when Sir Alex quits

Jose Mourinho has thrown his hat into the ring to replace Sir Alex Ferguson when he finally leaves Old Trafford.

Has Mourinho got the minerals to replace Ferguson?

The Inter Milan boss says he would jump at the chance to fill the Red Devils' hot seat when 67-year-old Ferguson calls time on his glittering managerial career.

After 23 years at United, Ferguson shows no signs of slowing down, but Mourinho says he would love the chance to continue his love affair with English football, if United chief executive David Gill and the board decided he was the right man to take over.

"I would consider going to Manchester United but United have to consider if they want me to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson,'' he told the Daily Mirror. "If they do, then of course.

"I like England, where the fans are very passionate and make the game a beautiful occasion with such an incredible atmosphere.''

The Portuguese coach isn't lacking in confidence and believes he has the right credentials to take one of the most high-profile jobs in world football.

And he took the opportunity to point to his success with Inter Milan, who retained their Serie A title this year, as a contrast to Chelsea's failure to recapture the Premier League title since his departure in 2007.

"I had many conversations before Chelsea and I decided on a divorce,'' he said. "It was difficult for me because we loved each other but the relationship went in one direction and it was best for everyone.

"Since I left I became champion again but they have not been champions again. I keep on winning and they don't.''

Defoe spends five hours in cell after police error

Jermain Defoe could sue the police after being unlawfully arrested and held in a cell for five hours in the early hours of Monday morning.

Defoe was held by the police for five hours

Defoe was held by the police for five hours

The Tottenham Hotspur striker was stopped in his car at 2.30am and arrested for driving while disqualified. However, while Defoe does have a six-month ban for speeding he is currently appealing the sentence and as such is perfectly within his rights to be driving.

An error on a police computer led them to believe he was driving illegally and he was taken to Harlow police station and held until 9am.

Police are then alleged to have refused to give the player his car back and also claimed they were not sure where it was parked.

The 26-year-old only just made his team's plane to China as they flew out for the Premier League Asia Trophy.

The police computer system had not been updated to show Defoe was appealing the ban. They refused to release the player until they could confirm the status of the case. They have admiited they made a mistake.

Defoe's lawyer, Nick Freeman, told the Daily Mirror: "I have advised him he has got a strong case for wrongful arrest and false imprisonment. How would any respectable member of society feel about that treatment? They would be upset.

"These things shouldn't happen. Five hours in custody has obviously caused him distress. But he was entirely professional, many a lesser person would have responded in a slightly more emotional way, particularly if they have work commitments.

"But he retained his dignity and remained calm. My client had to endure not only the humiliation of arrest but also being incarcerated like a common criminal.

"Then, to add insult to injury, upon his release the police refused to give Mr Defoe his car back until he produced his documents and stated they were not sure where they had put the vehicle.

"They also refused to return the keys, which were on the same bunch as his house keys, causing Mr Defoe extreme difficulties, not least because he had to return home and pack for a pre-season tour of Asia with his club.

"There seems to be a total disconnect between the courts, DVLA and police. Despite being told Mr Defoe was not breaking the law and calling for his immediate release, the police would not agree to freeing him until they could clarify the position with the courts at 9am.

"The police were notified by us at 4.30 that his driving licence was not suspended. It had been in all the papers. What has happened is that someone in court has not made the court record correctly, so the DVLA got the wrong information.

"When we told them this he should have been bailed pending further inquiries. It doesn't appear that anyone tried to mitigate the damage."

A spokesman for Essex police said: "The arrest of a man from Hertfordshire on suspicion of disqualified driving was based on information held on the police national computer.

"Following inquiries, officers discovered that the information was inaccurate and released the 26-year-old man without charge. The inputting error was made by police staff at Essex police and was an oversight as a result of a pending court appeal.

"If the motorist wishes to make a complaint, then he is advised to contact our professional standards department."
